Not sure but are you doing any quarantine time for the babies before you house them all together, which is not recommended? If he came to you sick you don't want the others getting sick also.

Your pictures on Facebook are amazing! Although I wouldn't mix species, your setups are amazing and are truly inspirational. Are the two stars you got wild-caught?

Oh Ekkapat:

I'm so sorry you've lost your little star tortoise. That's such sad news.

None of us would be able to tell you why he died, we can only offer suggestions for next time.

In my opinion, its not a good idea to mix different species of tortoise together in the same habitat. That might be the cause, but we don't really know.

If you put pine mulch instead of cypress mulch, that might have had something to do with it.

That's just so sad.

Sad news.
:( I think you should quarantine the tortoises first, and take them to the vet to get checked for any diseases/sickness.

Tortbrain is asking if your hatchling is wild caught (WC) or captive bred (CB)

Thank you OllieInAZ, I'm not sure, but I thought except for baby leopard the others were WC.

Hi kuma, sorry for confusing ya.
Did you purchase your torts from JJ mall? I believe those are mostly WC. I got to understand from a breeder friend that CB are more hardy and price 3times higher, talking bout a 2 incher ST.

I would definitely house different species separate. This goes especially for star tortoises because they are very susceptible to parasites and also stress fairly easily. I am so sorry for your loss. You can find breeders on kingsnake.com. Some of which are well known and very trustworthy. Just be weary of anyone that seems even a little suspicious and always talk to the person on the phone. Don't rely on email alone. Again so sorry for your loss.

Hi pee, I only know JJ mall sells the most pets. Especially exotics.
Maybe you can tell the seller what you've encountered and see how he/she respond? Is their big sulcata in a glass tank?
Ask if they have CB star or those above 3"?

You purchase from the one where they house big sulcata in glass tank?
Check you PM.
Thanks.

Here's some info for you that is pretty much what we all have been saying:

Keeping G. elegans successfully in northern climate is a challenge. The Star tortoise has a reputation of being particularly sensitive and fragile, and I must agree that this is at least partly true. Success is however not impossible if one keeps a few basic principles in mind: the species is extremely sensitive to respiratory problems if kept too cold or too damp; it is also very vulnerable to protozoans like Hexamita and Trichomonas. Star tortoises also seem to be more sensitive to problems caused by exposure to other species of tortoises, why a strict isolation is crucial in Star tortoise husbandry. Many reptiles can carry pathogens that are potentially lethal to Star tortoises without displaying any symptoms themselves - new data indicates that tortoises can carry lethal organisms this way for over 10 years. Wild caught Star tortoises generally adapt very slowly if at all to captivity, especially to the more unnatural conditions that are necessary when keeping them in northern climates.
