Mouth...injury?

I just noticed this morning on my star tort that on his right side a bit farther back on his upper beak a small chip and it cracks going up. I see him rubbing his face on his arm. How do I know when it starts to become a problem? And why did it crack? I have only had him a couple days but I have not handled him too much as he has just started getting used to me.

Does it look new? Could be an old scar that you hadn't seen until now?
