I know your dogs are protective of your home and grounds. Do you think they are also protective of the tortoises specifically? If they saw someone trying to hurt a tortoise, would they intervene?

~ Probably not, they would protect the home(not tortoises), us and one command.

Shepherds techically have a higher prey drive and a lower herding drive. After seeing your photos I would not be dumb enough to see if they would not protect the tortoises!!!!
Oh, I agree completely! I wouldn't test them! Just wondered what Greg thought.

~ Being in the professional K-9 world for half my career, they probably would not. They would instinctively protect the property and the tortoises are simply in the property. K-9's could be conditioned to protect certain objects, however it is basically out of conditioning and not for any natural protectiveness behaviors.

~ They are in the top four or five, @Tom may have further information, etc. My knowledge is basically confined and limited to LEO work dog training and experiences.

~ I will add that any dog we bring into the family, they are immediately introduced to the tortoises and all areas of the property. Any negative or improper aggressive behavior is immediately addressed and suppressed. They are closely monitored and always within verbal command distance.
