My babies are getting some size now. It takes a long time to raise turtles on straight fish but they're coming along.

Agreed. Truly a wonderful and awesome species.

So "your babies" as in you hatched them out?

No, my babies as in I feed them and clean them. Lol! A buddy of mine produces them every year here in Florida. Hopefully one day I will have that honor. Wild caught animals do just as good as captives. They just don't look as clean, sometimes. I'm not in a hurry and think it would be cooler to raise them from hatchlings and get them to reproduce. Thanks!

Oh how unique! How old is the one you are holding?

I was thinking was the frame of verbiage used :D. Best of luck and that is awesome your friend is successful. These guys need the help for sure. Which locale do you have if you know? Have you ever noticed any difference really in the Suriname, Venezuela etc.. locales? I don't know very much about these guys but had some biggens a long time ago. They are very amazing turtles. Fast as lightning when its food time.

I was just messing around. They are from Guyana locality, very pretty turtles I think. The Orinoco Matas seem to be the same. I heard they get bigger, maybe I will live long enough to find out.
They're a little over two now.

Wow, so cool! What would you feed them besides "straight fish" to accelerate their growth?

I have never been able to get them to touch pellets. I have 5 trillion fish at my farms so its easy enough to just give them what they want. My cycloderma aubryi are the only other turtle I haven't been able to get on pellets. Every other flapshell has learned pellets. Weird!

Are snails, and amphibians not a suitable source of food for aquatic species? I realize it would be quite costly.

I have a lot of snails in all the enclosures, some eat them an some don't. All turtles seem to like Cuban tree frog tadpoles. They really make sure they get them all before they go to the Mazuri again.

Unique indeed. Does anyone know how long would it take on average for the Mata Mata turtles to grow into their adult size of 18 inches?
