You shouldn't hibernate any tort the first year . Cause you don't know the torts health or did it get enough food to build up enough fats to live on through the hibernation time .

I agree with Grandpa.
It is considered to be a risk to hibernate your tortoise the first year of ownership.
Some don't hibernate young tortoises anyway, until they reach four or five years of age.

I am new around here too. I am so glad that you asked this question. Since this is my first year owning our boxies , I would not known to not hibernate them their first year. There is so much to learn huh?

I generally don't allow my tortoises to hibernate until they are three years old. By this time I know they are healthy enough to hibernate and I know they have built up a good body weight. Here's a nice article on hibernation written for the Tortoise Trust:
