Dan just found these three teeny little buzzers from one of his young female S.m. streckeri (Western Pigmy Rattlesnake) today. We werent sure she was even gravid, and really didnt show any. She had another stillborn and 2 slugs as well. One of these little neonates seems a little weak so we will have to wait and see if it makes it, it is also the smallest of the three.

;D ;D ;D ;D

I did not know that some snakes had live young. You learn something new every day. I can't believe how little they are. When you say slugs, do you mean they were not formed?

Yes rattlesnakes and almost all vipers/pitvipers as well as Boas give live birth. Slugs are unfertilized ovum.

Yes they are all ready to do so at birth, but its only a tiny drop. Not enough to do much damage. Same with all rattlesnake neonates.

What is their status in the wild? They being small are they overlooked by fearless rattlesnake hunters?

Congratulations on your new additions Anja. I too didn't realize they are so, so tiny. I 've seen Rattlers but never pigmy rattlers let alone babies. Love the orange markings on them.

The Western Pig's status seems to be OK, they are not a species of concern in any of the areas they range in.
