I’ve had my Russian dessert tortoise for about 3 years. It lives in a decent sized enclosed glass reptile cage. Desert light fixture and all. I’ve only bought this Sulla brand reptile bedding and litter pellets, Which says it’s a premium alfalfa substrate ideal for all habitats. He eats Romain lettuce or sometimes spring mix. Occasionally he gets a cantaloupe slice and he has a great appetite.
I’ve never had any issue until about two months ago when I bought a new bag of bedding online. I noticed when I went to clean the cage, on the outside it looked like tiny mold particles or dust/dirt splatter. I’ve wiped down the cage the last 2 times I’ve cleaned the cage and I noticed it back again. I looked closer this time and these little particles were actually moving. I’m assuming it’s the bedding material Since I haven’t had this issue before. What I need to know is are these harmless? They are almost like a light green/white color. Is the bedding even OK for the tortoise or should I be using something else instead? I really am just grossed out by the bugs and want to make sure I’m keeping a healthy environment for the tortoise. I am not super experienced when it comes to tortoises so any helpful advice would be awesome.
