Lamps...

Hi everyone!

I hope your having a great end of the year, and that all is well with your tortoises.

Anywho, I have a question about heating lamps.

I got my tortoise, Leo, in July. Since then, I've gone through around three light bulbs. Which is quite an expensive inconvenience.

I've been using the zoo med UV mercury vapor lamp. I was just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for another lamp that they use, one that doesn't die out on them every couple months.

Are you talking bulbs? I have to use MVBs for some the turtles, and so far they work great. I'm not their biggest fan, I prefer tube UVBs and a separate heat, but they haven't died yet... and they LOVE to splash!
All my lamps are rated 100w+, because if I want a larger watt bulb, I don't need to get a new one, and most of bulbs are lower than 150w, so the higher wattage lam can handle extra heat.
If you house your bulbs in a dome lamp, that may be whyy they're blowing out... dome lamps tend to trap heat.
