Looking for advice, can somebody tell me if this is the start of mbd? I’m worried, I’ve just noticed these indentations on my torts shell, he’s just 1 year old, humidity and temps are fine, diet is fine, give him calcium and vitamins twice a week, what am I doing wrong?

Your tortoise looks fairly normal with good signs of new growth taking place. Some tortoises get those little indentations in the first costal scutes as they are growing. They are not signs of MBD.

Are you soaking the tortoise daily? Good hydration is important for young tortoises to grow properly. High humidity alone is not sufficient.

I’m sorry to be a pain, I don’t think my first pics were very clear, but these are the indentations I’m talking about, it’s the same both sides, I can see where the new growth lines are but does it do this too? I’m just concerned ?

Your little tortoise looks beautiful! What you are seeing is a very common occurrence. My Hermann’s tortoise has the exact same thing and so do many other that I’ve seen on the forum. I’ve seen more with those same indents than I’ve seen without. It is not a sign a MBD. With my tortoise I have found the degree of the indent on those 2 front “shoulder” scuteshas lessened as he has grown.

I am not sure what it is about tortoises, but what you’re feeling is completely normal! When they’re so tiny and fragile it’s hard not to worry. I was a complete basket case for the first year and a half of my tortoises life. I have been trying to not be so much of a worry wart over the last 6 months. It’s a little easier now that he’s gotten so much bigger. It sounds like you’re doing a great job!

Yes, those little "dents" in the first costal scute on either side are exactly what I mentioned yesterday as being normal in some tortoises as they grow. They are NOT signs of MBD.
