Hello,

It has been some time since I posted, but my tortoise Taco is doing well. She has gotten huge! She lives in a greenhouse during winter but lately she is a little lethargic, not eating as much as normal and not moving around a lot. I thought it is because it is winter here (but temps are great in the greenhouse because it is heated. However, this morning I noticed that she has bright yellow (almost like egg yolk) discharge. Does this mean she is starting to lay eggs? Or is she maybe egg bound? I have just given her a bath and she is pooping normal poop as well. Attached are some images of the stuff she pooped out yesterday. I also attach pictures of where she lives with her 2 tiny friends. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried to upload pictures but I get an error message.

We'll really have to see pictures of the discharge, but right now our picture program is off line. Is it possible the discharge is urates? What has she been eating lately?

Can I send you the pictures maybe in a facebook chat? She has been eating normal stuff, (endive, mazuri, hay, aggro's Testudo, Dandelions and as a snack an occasional piece of cucumber. I doubt it is uriates it was really yolk like color and slimy like an egg.

You were right, it was in my spam folder. I've tried to copy/paste it here, but I get the error message.

Well, it doesn't look like urates. It's some sort of yellow slime/mucous. I don't think it's a broken egg, as you said she's pooped since, and you would have seen egg shell when she pooped. It might possible by an egg that didn't have any shell on it. This could very well be what it is. You said she's young, and maybe it's the first time for her to lay eggs.To be honest, I have no idea what it is, but soaking always works wonders. Set her up in a tub she can't climb out of and add enough warm water to come up to the middle of her sides. Just leave her soaking for 45 minutes or so. During this time she's going to scramble to get out. It's the scrambling in water that makes them empty their bladder and bowel. Hopefully this will clean her out. Keep us informed, please.

Thanks Yvonne, I have soaked her and will keep doing that the next few days just to be on the safe side. I have also made her an "egg-nesting" site where I loosened up the soil and added some moisture so she can decide if she would like to dig. She will be 7 years old in December and it would be the very first time she lays eggs. I will keep you guys posted obviously. If anybody has any other ideas, please let me know !

I rescued a leopard several years ago. She was egg-bound, had broken some of the eggs trying to pass them, and had uncalcified eggs as well. She was very active, distressed, and constipated. I found some broken eggs, and identified in her soak water what appeared to be egg contents. I took her in for xrays. The normal vet, thought the eggs looked find, but the specialist I sent the xrays to identified the fact that the eggs were broken, and she was not going to be able to pass them. She had to have surgery, and had to have repairs inside. She had torn herself trying to lay the eggs. If you have access to a good vet, that knows tortoises, I would get xrays sooner rather than later.
