They’re here! 2018 captive born and bred baby western Hermann’s tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni), ready for new homes.

This ad is for Insular (island) Italian forms/locales. The Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia are home to some incredible and interesting forms of the western Hermann’s tortoise. They are currently accepted under the taxon of T. hermanni hermanni but are said to possibly be an entirely new subspecies requiring further research. The parents for these 2018 babies hail directly from their homelands some 30+ years ago and are as text-book as it can possibly get. They are the founder stock for the North American Regional Studbook. These forms greatly differ in both phenotype and genetics from their mainland cousins. Each form/locale is broken down by a brief description.

Ragusa (Sicily, Italy) $650 each- A small form, primarily colored a bight yellow with minimal black carapace markings being 4-4.5” for males & 5-5.5” for females. Trapezoid shape with narrow heads. View adults/stats here: Ragusa Page

Madonie (Sicily, Italy) $650 each- Slightly larger specimens at between 4.5-5” for males and 6-6.5” for females give or take. Greenish yellow colors. These are the famed “Sicilian Spured” hermanni that actually exhibit thigh spurs like the Greek tortoise. This is unique to their form.

Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy) $750 each- The smallest known form of the western Hermann’s. Males measure 3.6 to 4” while females measure 4.5 to barely 5”. Very similar in size to the more common Egyptian tortoise. Check out our comparison here: https://www.hermannihaven.com/tiny-testudos
Coloration for Etna is a bold black with bright, rich yellow highlights.

Sardinia, Italy $650 each- Truly the “giants” of the western subspecies attaining 6-7” for males and 7-8.5” for females. Vibrant gold with jet black. Extremely robust and impressive animals.

Serious inquirers only on these animals please.

The western Hermann’s tortoise is one of, if not the most endangered reptile of Western Europe today and continues to be annihilated by habitat destruction, fires, and poaching, but quite possibly the biggest threat is impurity. Finding legitimately pure specimens is a hardship but that’s exactly what our animals are. They are genetically as pure as it gets to their type and precisely tagged to a place of origin so that we are able to go as far as keeping natural forms/locales legitimate as well.

It’s important to us that they end up in the right hands with people who are serious about prolonging their existence in captivity as nothing less than the unique, beautiful animal they are. So if you’re looking for historic, legitimately pure tortoises that are absolutely rare, please contact us through this ad or the site.
