I noticed this today and I have no clue what it is.

Annabella (my 5 year old red footed tort) is new to me & is my first tortoise.

So while I'm posting this thread i will ask a few questions about other topics such as her temp house and her skin.

First off I'm asking every one what they think this spot is on her neck?
it kinda looks like a growth of some sort. I'm really worried about this if I need to find a vet i will but it will be a couple weeks before ill have the cash to take her.

Second the substrate I'm using is
"top soil dirt" from Walmart
& coconut fiber from Eco earth
She is in a kitty pool for a couple weeks to a month :(
I have a kitten so I have a ferret playpen around the kitty pool to keep the cat out and to clamp the lights on.

I spray it 3 times a day with a spray bottle

I'm using a red basting heat lamp until tomorrow it's 150w

Tomorrow I'm getting a second clamp lamp with a
Heat emitter 100w
Basking spot light 100w

How far do you think I should put the lights away from the substrate?
are these

And LOL my questions got deleted and now I can't remember what else to ask :-/

So for now thats it and I will add more as I remember.

ANOTHER QUESTION I HAD

Her breathing is loud at times not wheezing just heavy
Is this normal????

HELP!!! What is this???

Hi Jessica,

When I first got my russian tort, he had something similar on his neck. It was like a blood blister but wouldn't heel because of his neck going in and out all the time. Eventually I took him to the vets and some antibiotic cream soon did the job of clearing it up.

Just an idea of what it might be?

Hope all goes well

X

RE: HELP!!! What is this???

Tortoises frequently get that type of injury on their neck. My yellowfoot was trying to climb the wall to get out. Her neck was extended. She slipped down the wall and the edge of her carapace cut into the skin on her neck. It is still a bit raw in that spot and the injury happened last year. It is very hard to get an injury in that area to heal because the tortoise is constantly moving it and re-injuring it. All you can do is just regular first aid (or take it to a vet).

RE: HELP!!! (Injury on neck)

daily application neosporin or polysporin if it's bacterial -
silver sulfadiazine is vet's drug of choice for general scrapes, cuts and
bruises and should be administered daily -

since this area is a frequent site of incidental injury as suggested,
it may just be superficial and heal spontaneously

but it is also suggestive of herpetic lesion
and should be professionally inspected by a vet

good luck

RE: HELP!!! (Injury on neck)

I would just keep it clean (warm water flush a couple times a day) and as suggested, you can use neosporen or you could even use a spray of bactene (sp) if you are nervous about spraying then you can spritz a q tip dripping with the bactene and apply it to the spot a few times a day...

I would be cautious about visiting a vet UNLESS the vet is very EXPERIENCED in torts specifically.....
