Spots on the keel and scutes, four toes on the back legs...looks like an eastern box turtle. Can you post a picture of the bottom shell?

Hard to tell at that age (before the color pattern comes in). It might be an eastern like PJay thinks, and it might be a gulf coast.

Because of the overall dark plastron, more than likely an eastern (Terrapene carolina carolina)

Sorry don't know. But whatever species it may be, it's adorable. :D

And a very warm welcome to the forum! :)

I'm going with Eastern and is in need of some soaks, It looks extremely dry. It amazes me that people sell turtles and can't tell the person buying it what type it is.

Eastern. Gulf Coast (which I agree was the other possibility) has a lighter plastron than the eastern.

Friend bought this turtle and had no idea what it is. View attachment 190252

What's the location? I agree it's either an eastern or gulf coast. The rich black carapace could be associated with the panhandle, or it could be an intergrade. A lot of intergrades are being found and plenty are bred and sold nowadays. So who knows. My guess....it's a box turtle:)
