How to tell age of leopard tortoises

Hi I rescued 2 leopard tortoises a while ago I was told the male was 4 and female was 5 . the male is 8 inches and female is 11 inches does that sound right size ?

Sounds like the right range to me. Babcocki or Pardalis?

Actually, depends on a lot of things. My male leopard on 9/22/13 was 3LB10oz
8 inches and he would have been approx. 2 years 7 months. Which would make your male small for being 4 or mine large for being 2 yrs. 7 mo. Because they all grow at their own pace and diet and hydration plays a part in it all, it's hard to say if that is accurate or good size for age. As long as they are healthy and doing good, that's what really counts anyway:D

I'd say there is no true way to look at a tortoise and tell its age. They definitely grow differently depending on foods, environment, or genetics.

My Babcocki male was small until he hit about 6 years and then he tripled in size over the next 2 years. There is no standard growth rate to go by.

Just go with what you were told and make sure they are healthy and happy. Age really doesn't matter to a tortoise.
