Good afternoon. Found this 3 toed box turtle. Anyone know what these holes are? Is it common? Anything to worry about? Thanks in advance

Could be indents from dog teeth. Nothing to do about it now. Almost looks like some sort of infection bored out those holes. Keep it clean, feed and house it well.

Quite a few wild caught box turtles came with a hole or two in the shell. I think it has been attributed to the way they were caught, but don't remember for sure.

Also overall even though there is that infection thing and those holes, this looks like an old box turtle and has survived all these years with those. It will be fine, just take care of it well and it probably won't get worse.

Box turtle hunters were known to use some kind of pincers to grab animals by the shell (instead of bending over to pick them up...so seriously lazy). This did result in some puncture/pinch marks on both sides of the shell.

He's pretty banged up, so I wouldn't wonder there have been quite a number of adventures over the years. Especially if he's been in-and-out of captivity.

Obviously keep him in quarantine for at least a week and keep those funky spots under observation.
