Hi,

I just found two eggs in my indoor enclosure. The eggs are currently located in 50/50 sand and coco bark. They are located near the basking area and the temp is around 80F.

Should I move them? I currently don't have an incubator , does anyone have advice where to buy one.

This there first time laying eggs so they might not be fertile but don't want to chance it.

I appreciate the help.

Thank you,

Ton

First you need to remove the eggs, before the adults break them. Mark the tops with an X (in pencil) so you know which way to place them.
Place them in a container with some of the substrate in the bottom. If you have a warm place in the house (between 28C and 32C), you can put them there until you get an incubator.
Google Hovabators and you should find places that sell them on-line, or try your local feed and grain stores. Get the basic model that doesn't turn the eggs and doesn't have a fan.

Hi Dan,

thank you for the advice. Under advisement of my local reptile store, I purchase some vermiculite. They told me lay the eggs in them. Do you agree with choice or just my normal substrate?

They also gave me plans and instuctions to build a incubator with foam cooler. He sugust using aquarium heater to maintain the temp. I have attached diagram. What do you think of the plan?

Soundwave, I can't comment on the home made foam cooler incubator but the vermiculite is fine. When you first set up your incubator make sure you let it run about 24 hours to make sure you can set your temp and get your humidity right.
Congratulations on the eggs and I hope they are fertile :)

The way that I am reading this is that the aquarium heater is not fully submerged? All of the heaters in my experience needed to be fully under the water or they would crack and blow up...sorta...anyhow, don't they all need to be under the water???
I made an incubator out of a 10 gallon aquarium and used vermiculite with a black light bulb for heat. It stayed a steady 90 degrees...

Hi maggie,

I they advised to completely submerge the heater. I'm testing it out but it appears to not provide enough heat.

For for 10 gallon incubator, did you place the eggs on top of the vermiculite or one plastic egg cartoon then on top of the vermiculite? Did you also place water in the tank for humidity? Did you also use a top for the tank?

Thank you both Robyn and Maggie for advice.

As someone who is wise once told me when I had my first eggs, Don't panic. We are here to help.
Hope these sites help. I know how tense one feels with the first eggs. Do you know when they were laid?

Hi Robyn,

Thank you for the information and support.

I decided to purchase a Hova-bator and should arrive in a few days.

I have question about vermiculite, should I lay the egg directly on top of the vermiculite or use plastic egg crate to buffer between the egg and vermiculite.

How do you moist the vermiculite? should lightly mist the vermiculite and egg?

Once again, thank you for your help

You place the eggs directly on the vermiculite Ton. I wouldn't wet the vermiculite at all. I hatch all my eggs on a dry substrate, just make sure you have a container of water in the incubator to keep the humidty about 60 to 70%.
