Herman Tortoise-Male or Female?

Hi,

I have had the above Herman tortoise for over 40 years and I am trying to establish whether he is male or female. He has just come out of hibernation this afternoon. I am hoping to get another tortoise for some company for him or her.

I think he is male, but I would be grateful for any expert opinion that could help me.

You have a male.

Tortoises should never be kept in pairs. They are solitary animals and prefer to be the sole kings or queens of their castles. Other tortoises are not seen as company or friends. They are seen as territorial intruders to either fight and drive away, or rape and then drive away. Sounds harsh, but that's life in the reptile world.

Groups can sometimes work in the right situation, but never pairs.

Looks like an Ibera Greek, Testudo graeca ibera, rather than a Hermanns

I think it is a boy. I also don't think it is a Hermanns.
