Hello everyone I bought what was said to be a baby western hermans from my local pet store about one week ago. After doing some more research on these forums I realize now that it might be an eastern hermans seeing as they are much more common. Either way its fine with me, I just wanted a happy and healthy tort...which is what I got. :) Just curious is all. I have no idea what the sex is either and I don't know if its to early to tell or not seeing as how the lil guy is less than 1yr old still. I only have one descent quality pic as of right now on my phone. I will post more tonight when I get home. I would greatly appreciate any help with an I.D!

I love my baby C.B. Hermann Tortoise!

Can you get a pic of the plastron(Underside) That photo will certainly be more distinguishable to determine which species(sub) it is.

Awesome, thanks for your reply! I will definitely post some more pics of the little guy tonight when I get home from work. I will get one of the plastron like you said as well!

I can tell you right now just by seeing that photo that you do not have a Western Hermann's. However, in order to determine if it is Eastern or Dalmatian, we will need a clear plastron shot.

Ohh ok, thanks for filling me in Chris! I tried to get a pic of the little guy tonight when I got home from work. But he was all burrowed in for the night and my gf wouldn't let me bugg him. So I guess I will have to wait until tmrw now. What do you mean by Dalmation though?

It is a third subspecies; eastern, western and dalmation :)
Go to hermanni Chris's threads about identifying subspecies; he's got some really good pics and info...

Thanks Jax! I will definitely have to check out that thread by Chris if I can find it. Lol! I already read his threads about how to tell the diff between eastern and western herm and I saw his diagrams. Very helpful! However I didn't see anything about a Dalmation sub species.

I wish I had more photos on my phone of babies and plastron shots for that matter, but here is a baby Dalmatian:

And here is a baby Western for comparison:

Wow, ok...thanks for the visuals Chris! You can definitely tell the difference between the two even without a plastron shot. The shell on that dalmation looks much lighter than the shell on the western. I will for sure get a plastron shot tonight bc I'm getting anxious now to find out what he/she is. Thanks again for all of your help Chris! :)

Thought so... thanks for the positive I.D. Chris! Can you tell the sex at this point at all, or is it still to early?

It's way too early. You can make guesses based on what you see,but more times than often, that all changes. It's really best to just wait. I can't tell you how many babies have been inaccurately sexed for me.

Ok, gotcha! Well thanks again for all of your help and insight Chris. :) And once again just to clarify you said that it was an eastern and you put a square symbol. Did you mean to say eastern box or eastern hermanns?

No I attempted to put a smiley face after the word eastern...guess that didn't work out too well. Eastern Hermanns.

Ohh ok...lol! Thanks for clarifying. He/She is about the size of an egg rnow. Do you have any idea what an estimate on age would be for the little guy?

Again something tough to say but he's definitely young probably only a few months but possibly up to a year.
