What is this weed? Growing in the woods and along grassy trails.

I've always thought that was THISTLE.
Probably incorrectly.
My Redfoot DO EAT IT in the yard.
They have for many years.
It's one of the few weeds that they eat in the yard besides Purslane

I k ow the purple flower beside it is thistle. The yellow thing...no clue

Looks like Sow Thistle - edible in any case (as are all the dandelion like flowers)

Do the leaves feel slightly "furry"?

I don’t know what it is precisely but from the notched edges on the petals, I’d say it’s a thistle relative. I’d like to have a better look at a full flower, looking down.

That is not thistle or sow thistle.

I also think it’s sow thistle. We get that in the UK.

This weed sure does resemble Prickly Sow Thistle but the leaves seem much more prickly, thinner and more elongated than normal sow thistle. But, the yellow flower spike “fits” the profile, as does the area where it’s growing.

Occurrence:
Prickly sow-thistle is a troublesome annual or overwintering weed common on arable land. It is also found in gardens, on roadsides, waste places and other disturbed habitats. It is recorded up to 1,500 ft in the UK. Prickly sow-thistle grows on most soils but prefers well drained slightly acid to alkaline soils, and has some tolerance of saline conditions.

I see those all the time, never fed them though. Painful little buggers when you have shorts on.

There are many many different types of sow thistle some have prickly and some have smooth leaves. The ones I have growing in my garden at the moment have a smooth leaf just like the OP picture. If you look at the pictures on Tortoise Table you can see there are many variants of sow thistle.
