HELP ME PLEASE

im looking after a tortoise.
2 days ago i had it out on the garden,
it ate a STONE that was the same size as its head.
My questions are
1: will it die?
2: is this normal?
3: do i need to go see a vet?
4: do i need to PANIC?

all feedback will be more than welcome
thanks

You should go to see vet urgently. That could make him die.

If you are sure that it ate the stone and it really was as big as its head, then yes you should go to the vet. Any tortoise will have a very tough time passing a stone that size. Other remedies include feeding your tortoise some olive oil with a dropper to help ease the stone out the other end, but if the stone is as large as you say, I don't know if that will help. Good luck!

RE: HELP ME PLEASE

Hi Touque1969:

Welcome to the forum!!

May we know your name and where you are?

You can try giving the tortoise some mineral oil. Don't use any other kind. Mineral oil is non-absorptive and will coat all the tubes and pipes inside the tortoise, helping the stone to slip through. Get an eye-dropper or a syringe without the needle and put two or three droppersful down the tortoise's throat. Then take the dropper and put a couple of droppersfull into the cloaca (that' the hole in the tail where the poop comes out).

Good luck. Keep us informed. It won't happen over night. It takes a while for stuff to move through a tortoise's digestive tract.

RE: HELP ME PLEASE

Are you sure it was a rock? When they start eating rocks someitmes they arent getting proper diet or calcium.
Do the mineral oil, and make sure he is still eating and being kept plenty warm to help him digest the food and
move things along. it could pass just fine, but it could also cause major problems.
What kind of tortoise is this? Adult or baby?
What would the owner want you to do?
Get a vet lined up Now...find the best one near you incase you have to end up going there. Most Dog/cat vets do not see tortoises. They might try to help, but you really need to find a Vet that knows reptiles.

Hello touque1969, welcome to the forum.

I merged your threads together to make it easier for you to see the replies left by people. It is easier if you only create one thread per topic.

I agree that the tortoise needs to see a vet and get an Xray. Good luck!
