New to the world of tortoise I have a Russian and for the first 11 days he was active yesterday I fed him three baby carrots cut up and roman lettuce he ate it all for the first time usually I am throwing half away but when he was done he would not move for a minute I thought he was dead after picking him up he started to move around I originally thought he ate too much but all day today he's been doing the same thing he just sits in the corner facing the wall hand even last night he didn't go into his hiding box to sleep. His eyes look fine I don't know what's going on help???

Welcome to TFO! Have an educated stay here :) this is what TFO member Yvonne G says: "This is a normal thing. I have no idea what goes through their little pea brains, but we hear the same story over and again - I brought the tortoise home and he ate a lot, then the next day all he does is hide - or scratch at the corners - or try to escape.

The only thing I can figure is the tortoise is happy to have some fresh food and eats like a pig, but when he wakes up the following day, realizes he's not in his usual spot so he gets nervous about it and either tries to escape back to his usual spot, or hides because he doesn't feel safe.

All you can do is give him time. Treat him the way he's supposed to be treated. Feed him every day, placing him in front of the food and stepping quickly out of sight. Soak him occasionally if an adult and daily if a baby. And give him about two weeks to settle in.

You might try adding a few plants, either real or fake, to give him a more closed in/safe feel.

Also I suggest reading this care sheet:

And this diet sheet

Good luck :D

I suggest you follow the diet sheet because it has all the important staple foods :) I don't recommend lots of carrots, try opuntia cactus, bok choy, and whatever else on that long list! Good luck!

No it won't do that, it's not just the "ideal" food for the long run... Once or twice is defiantly okay, just not N everyday thing... I believe some people use it to increase Vit A, but there are always healthier options:) carrots are an okay food, no toxicity whatsoever! Sorry if I accidentally stressed you out, good luck!

Tedo loved it two he went to town on it way more then the collerd greens or the spring mix
It shouldn't have an affect on physical activity. My Russian loves carrots and romaine. If I let him, he'd probably eat that daily. I don't have any other input.

What is your set up like? Does your Russian get outside time in the sun, do you have a UVB lamp for day time, a heater at night, how old is your Russian, does your heat turn up or down, what's your four temperatures (basking temperature, cool side, hot side, and night time temp? How's your diet?

This is a very common story. I don't know the 'why' of it, but I do know that he'll be fine after he acclimates. We hear this all the time - my tortoise ate a lot the very first day, then the next day all he did was hide/try to escape/climb the walls.

My guess is that the first day the tortoise doesn't realize there's been a big change in his life. It's just, "Oh boy...a big pile of food!!" Then night time comes then morning and wait...what's this? I'm not in my normal spot. Where am I? I'd better try to get back to where I belong.

Just make double sure you are providing what the tortoise needs and a big enough habitat that includes UVB either from the sun or a light, food and water, and give him time. He'll come around eventually.

Place the food on the feeding station, place the tortoise in front of the food, then step out of sight.

Be patient.
