After more reading I've settled on making my own closed chamber enclosure large enough for the first few years. I may do this by creating a solid wood and plexiglass door for the awkward shelf space I mentioned earlier. Or it might be free standing with a 2*4 frame and plywood walls and floor. Decisions!!

Also to clarify because I mentioned buying a house in a few years, we are currently in a house with a yard but renting. We have free reign over the backyard because it was basically a trash lot when we moved in and we have been steadily fixing it up. The landlord has accepted my love of animals quite admirably XD
