I am Clayton and I have been interested in owning a tortoise for a very long time now! I would consider myself a beginner, but I do have a little experience with other turtles. :tort: I am wondering if anyone has any advice for me about what I'm looking for.

I want a tortoise that I can keep inside at night in a large plastic tub, but on a nice day or during the summer keep outside where he/she belongs. I do have size limits though, and cannot own a very large tortoise, at most 12-14 inches. I live in the Midwest (USA) and it is humid and warm during the summer. If anyone has any advice or recommendations, it would be very appreciated!

Thanks :)
Clayton

Hi Clayton:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

I think any of the Mediterranean tortoises would be a good fit. The little Russian tortoises are especially hardy. And if you didn't want to set them up indoors during the winter, you could box them up and allow them to brumate (hibernate)...or not.
