Growing own weeds - in just top soil?

I have nothing green about my fingers at all but going to give it a go. Do I just plant in top soil? I don't want to grow in any compost/soil that may be harmful for torts

Why wouldn't you want to use compost?

I use a mix usually based on topsoil with coir, compost and vermiculite mixed in.

Was worried anything else might be damaging to the tortoise if he eats what was grown in something it shouldn't - like I say, green fingers not my forte!

What I was going to do wasn't far off the square foot garden thing. Just worried about planting IN something (soil-wise) that may be harmful to tort.
