This is my first post. Any suggestions why my Greek tortoise would be moving his legs slightly but constantly when he appears to be sleeping? I suspect a lack of calcium could be the culprit for this new behavior. He’s not done this before. He’s regularly fed chopped dandelion greens or Collards with rehydrated ZooMed grassland tortoise food. Any further information that would be helpful I am happy to provide. Thank you all. This little one is very special to me and your suggestions are appreciated.

They move their legs to breathe. Calcium is important but im not aware of a connection. Maybe a video to show us what you mean?

I was only able to upload pictures, not video. The movement is ever so slight but noticeable if that is helpful.

Welcome!

What are the temperatures in the enclosure?

Also, it looks like it's probably a Russian tortoise, not a Greek. Post some more photos of the tortoise and we can help identify.

Yes its a russian tort, (testudo horsfieldii) looks in good shape. Nails are a bit long but thats easy to fix. Legs thing is probably just breathing.

The leg movement is normal. It's caused by the tort's breathing.

Hello and welcome. A couple of things: 1. The tortoise should never be loose on the floor. This is a recipe for disaster. 2. Get rid of the moss ASAP. Its an impaction hazard and serves no purpose.

This might help:
