"Free feed" or limit how long the food is down

I would NEVER "free feed" my dogs (leave the food out all the time). I do find myself free feeding my tortoises though. I fill their dishes, they never eat it all and I replace their food the next day. I believe I am creating picky eaters that are also getting less social with me. I hope this makes sense. I mean it makes sense, just like with dogs, if they have food all the time they don't "need" you and food isn't as important as it might be.

Any reports on what you have experienced is appreciated.

PS - I hate this time of year, I live in the Pacific Northwest and it is almost, but not quite, warm enough for them to move outdoors for the summer.

Thank you, this has been a VERY helpful group.

I agree. Tortoises are grazers. They should be allowed to graze at will all day on the right foods.
