I found a Stinkpot/Musk turtle on my lawn. If someone has lost a turtle in the greater New Orleans area please contact me and provide a description to be reunited with owner.

If they are native to your area you should let it go in the same spot you found it. If you have dogs and a fenced yard, put it outside the dogs fenced area.
I don't know and don't want to assume if it is wild or not, which is why I'm asking. I get a red eared slider that often escapes from my neighbors pond. A lot of people in my neighborhood have ponds and I would hate to release unless no one responds. In the event I do not get a response, I take unclaimed turtles to the canal close by. I spoke to a wildlife marshall who told me that's fine as it happens a lot around here.
What does it hurt to check?
