First time tortoise owner, have a question about handling

Start petting on the head also. Bring your hand slowly towards him so he sees your hand. Opo loves to be petted on his head and neck. Also comfortable with petting his front legs. It just takes time.

Once they realize ur the food god they love you! Jack has never been really shy w me since day one but its weird .. if my kids or anyone else puts food in he doesnt come running

Which surprised me w a tortoise..i always found that behavior with lizards but didnt expect it from tortoises

Like Yvonne said, feeling secure goes a long way towards confidence in you. I would always lay Chug on my chest and hold him tightly against me. Having all 4 feet on me helped him feel safe. He had no fear of being carried that way.
