My husband & I just adopted Turbo from our Phoenix Herpetological Society on 03/07/18. We chose a fully grown sulcata as we live on an acre and have a large yard for him to freely roam. The Herp Curator would not provide a guess/estimate w/regard to age. We would love to know if he is geriatric or closer to a middle-aged adult. We have two young sons who are also curious as to how old their new brother happens to be. :)

We are told he feels approximately 80-90 lbs though we have not put him on a scale yet.

Though these photos show him on our large covered travertine patio, he has 2 large grass areas and plenty of natural desert (sand/dirt) and gravel areas to roam as well.

Grateful for this forum! Hoping to meet some new friends and some tort enthusiasts who can help guide us along on our exciting new journey.

In Light,

Kate

Sulcatas weren't widely available in this country until about 1990, so that puts the upper limit of his age at less than thirty. In the right conditions, they can reach 80 pounds in 7-8 years, so that means he could be as young as 7 years old.

There isn't a choice in your poll for 7-30, so I can't vote. :)

As the parent of an 8 year old, 24 inch, 85 pound Sudan, I can say it's rare they get that size so quick. There are two other Sudan owners whose records show that their 300 pound beasts were not more than 65 pounds at this age. Your boy is truly handsome! Although I cast my vote for 10-15...he could be one of those that are younger than 10...I'd be curious to find out how long he is! @Tom is quite right!

We were just discussing aging in a different thread. If we are playing a game and I had to make a guess, My guess for this tortoise is 14 years.

The central part of the scutes are quite worn, and may be hiding some additional growth. If it were mine, I would put it at 14-16 years old.

Welcome to the forum! No idea his age, but Turbo is a great looking sulcata!
I noticed you were feeding him broccoli so I thought I would share this. The tortoise table is a good place to find out what you generally can feed your tort babies. Here is some info about broccoli for instance:
Common Name: Broccoli (Calabrese, Sprouting Broccoli)
Latin Name: Brassica oleracea (Italica Group)
Family Name: Brassicaceae/Cruciferae
Broccoli contains goitrogens that interfere with thyroid activity and could damage the liver and kidneys. Therefore, although Broccoli is not actually toxic, we would advise you not to feed it to your tortoise.

Now would be a great time for you and your family to begin a Vegan diet, exercise daily, get moderate amounts of sunshine, and drink good filtered water. You guys only need to live another 100 years! :)
