My Speke’s Hinge back Tortoise, Mack, usually blinks every once in a while. I just gave him his first bath a few hours ago. Now, he’s closing his eyes for 10-30 seconds at a time and does this every minutes or two. I’ve seen this somewhere online before but for tortoises in general.

What should I do?

What is the problem?

Thank you!

Hello and welcome

Please can you post photos of your enclosure and lighting so we can see if there’s an environmental issue.

We also need to know details of enclosure temperatures, humidity and details of diet including any supplements

I’m feeding him kale, carrots (squash once a week) and calcium powder which he hasn’t been eating and it’s building up in his food bowl. I don’t have a humidity monitor but I do have a UV and heat light as well as a heating pad for a basking area. In the basking area it’s usually 84 degrees and in the other area it’s usually around 75 degrees. At night it’s 73-75 (this Is all Fahrenheit).IMG_1511105994.838556.jpgIMG_1511106012.945468.jpg

I’m really concerned I’m doing everything wrong. I love him but it’s hard to find correct information out there and I just want him to be safe, healthy and happy

Calcium powder: A tiny pinch sprinkled on food as sparsely as possible 3 times a week is all that is needed. You can overdo it which inhibits the uptake of other minerals... and, as you have discovered, if you dose too heavily they refuse to eat it too!

I don’t know details on the care of this species, but basking at 84 is too cool. Normally 95-100F is required for basking.

I’m tagging Moderator @Yvonne G who will hopefully know members that specialise in this species
