I have had my first Hermanns tort for a few months now. This morning while giving him a soak I notice he might have an extra scute. What do you think?ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1419956532.959698.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1419956548.197985.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1419956560.554424.jpg

What causes a hatchling to be born with an extra scute?

Sometimes it's genetic and sometimes it's due to a high temperature in the incubator. If it's the high temperature, then your tortoise is female. If it's genetic, could be either male or female. There's nothing wrong with it and it's purely cosmetic.

AWWW what a cute tortoise :) I'm pretty sure that water dish is not a good/safe dish to use for your tortoise as what I'm seeing from the picture. I would definitely recommend as many others would agree, a terra cotta saucer type water dish for your tortoise. Your tortoise can climb up & flip on its back, that's why those are not safe :(

I bought mine knowing he/she had an extra scute, and I think it adds character! Your tort is very cute.
