Hi,

I hope some one can help...

I have purchased a new 100w day basking bulb and a reflector dome fitting with lamp stand and I am not sure how high I need to have the bulb to produce a 32 degrees basking temperature for my tortoise?

I have tried using a thermometer, but I can't seem to get an accurate reading!

So if knows the average height required it would be a great help :)

Thank you in advance for any advice you have

This is going to be different in every enclosure and there are a lot of variables to consider. Dome size and shape, type of bulb, substrate and dampness levels, whether or not you use a flat basking rock of some sort, etc… It will also change throughout the day as the ambient warms up, and also seasonally from winter to summer. 32C is fine for the morning, but you should shoot for 36-37 by the end of the day.

It will depend on several factors, ambient temp, size of enclosure.... The best way to measure is with a temperature gun. Hardware stores carry them for less than pet supply stores.
