Hello all! I haven't created a thread on Dexter since the prolapse situation. HE'S doing well. I have recently seen his young man parts, and it has definitely confirmed male.

His personality is definitely forming. When he roams, he always checks out what I'm doing. I'm sure it's an investigation of what I'm bringing to eat. It's apparent that an appetite is always present and ever growing. At just over 3 years old, he weighs in at 25 pounds and is 15 inches long. He's Gained 16 pounds in one year. It never ceases to amaze me that he was 2.5 inches 3 years ago.

Here's some pictures.

He is beautiful! You mentioned a prolapse? What is that?

Thank you!

A prolapse can happen to animals as well as humans. it is "a slipping forward or down of one of the parts or organs of the body. Usually with a turtle/tortoise, it is their bladder or their male/female part. It can occur due to something blocking their intestinal tract, which can cause the organ to come out, and stay out. It can also occur due to parasite, and, in my case, straining to go to the bathroom, causing the organ to come out. Initially, I thought it was my tortoise figuring out he's a man, and "playing" with it, which is common. They can bring it out rub it on the ground and bring it back in, usually cleaning off whatever gets on it. It's supposed to stay moist, and it eventually got swollen and infected. I was able to treat it by doing sugar water soaks 3-4 times a day, and applying mineral oil and a topical ointment prescribed from the vet. I got lucky and amputation was not necessary.

You can look in the search menu on different topics like these. I'm not highly educated in this area, so I may have missed some information.

This is Dexter 3 years ago. The bowl in the pictures used to be his soaking bowl.
