Hello :) I recently got a red foot tortoise and I am having trouble deciphering if it is a girl or a boy.

Could anyone help me figure out if this little tort is a male or female? Thanks so much! ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1408905639.755389.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1408905651.204342.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1408905661.154426.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1408905686.488085.jpg

All babies look like females when starting out. You will not be able to determine gender until 6-8 inches. You have a split scute baby and I think some people believe that split scute tortoises tend to be female, though. You'll have to be pretty patient to finally find out. Either way, he/she is beautiful :D

No way to know yet. Incubation temps can offer a clue, but that is not definitive in the real world. Most of the time split scutes like that indicate female, but there are rare exceptions.

Isn't split scute 'sydrome' from higher temps in the incubator? And higher temps are more likely to be girls?
