Do you know a good tortoise vet. The mouth issue could be due to scar tissue. There might be something they can do to increase the opening, after the tortoise is in better shape.

I have found that to be one of life's golden rules. Once something is lost, the absolute quickest, most efficient, and absolutely guaranteed ways to find it...is to go purchase a replacement. The lost item will be standing proudly in plain sight as soon as you return...
Usually, the missing object mysteriously appears out of thin air AFTER you unwrap and unpack the new one...

I have an excellent vet.
I've been hydrating the tortoise and have been removing some of the dead facial skin with a Q-Tip.
Once I've done all that I can do, we may go see Dr. K.
But I don't think that there is much even she can do right now.

I’m all for teens/children having pets; but this was a major undertaking for a novice. I hope it didn’t spoil her taste for torts...
I think that the deformities and the health issues directly relate to how those two young people kept this animal.
Although the girl that passed the tortoise to me was only keeping it the way she was told to by the other.
There was some pretty horrible animal husbandry going on.....

As in Dr Kelleher? Dr Thielen moved to a practice about 30 miles from me. It’s nice to have someone who actually knows exotics.

Here's some more puzzling photos.
Keep an open mind now.
This animal truly IS at least 16 months old.....
He has an umbilical scar and what looks like an egg tooth.
The egg tooth might just be part of his facial deformity.
Between the size, the scar and what looks like an egg tooth, I'd guess that someone was playing a game with me.
Yet the age is comfirmed.
The first owner wouldn’t have any reason to lie about the age would they? As the tortoise is so small for its apparent age, I would assume that the shell has not done much developing leaving the egg sac scar there. The scar tends to go away as the tortoise grows and new keratin is made. I don’t know whether that’s possible or even makes sense.

Yes
She saved my tortoise QUEEN BERTHA a few years back.
There is another lengthy post about that here somewhere....

Very little of this makes any sense.
It's why I wanted advice from others with more hatching and rearing experience.
Your explanation is as good as anything I've come up with...

Drum roll please.....
Exactly 40 ounces.
He (I'll refer to him now as he) drank another huge amount of carrot water and took 2 chomps of blackberry.
He also took his first poop.
A pretty good sized one.
So I'm pleased with that.
Food it and food out, checked.
All good news

I’ve raised 3 hatchlings for a year, there egg sac scar is completely gone as they’ve grown. As new keratin is produced, it sort of layers it self. That’s what I’ve come up with any way.

That’s very cool. I love watching that show. I appreciate their passion for helping animals. I’ll search for the other post.
Bertha is the reason we tell people to wait AT LEAST a full day before burying or disposing of what appears to be a dead tortoise. In Bertha's case, her body COMPLETELY shut down. And then it rebooted...
