In the future I will be getting an Argentine black and white tegu for my first lizard. I'll be making a DIY 8x5x3 enclosure. I like the design of this DIY, but I'm wondering if it can support the weight of a 12" substrate (because the author built it for snakes). Also, for those of you who have done DIY lizard projects in the past, what tools do you usually use?

If it will hold a big boa, it should hold a young tegu.

If your worried about it just reinforce it with some 2 by 4's

As far as tools go you will need
1. Drill
2. Drill bits and screw bits
3. Caulk guns

I never got into the "blues" or an of that fancy stuff. I just like the regular ones. Merianae or rufescens. Never could decide which one I liked better. Clyde is just a regular Argentine black and white. He's hibernating underground right now.
