I've seen numerous people ask this question, and I just wanted to answer it in a post so that when people search up this question they find a quick, easy answer. The short answer is no, ONLY if the care is right.

If you are caring properly for your tortoise (correct diet, lots of space) then it is virtually impossible for your tortoise to eat too much or get fat. They should have access to food ALL day. In the wild, they can graze whenever they desire. We need to recreate this by giving them access to a large pile of assorted greens that they can snack on throughout the day.

Your tortoise CAN get fat and eat too much if you care for it like this. Living in a small pen that doesn't allow it to walk enough (many keep their's in a storage tub or aquariums) as well as a diet that is incorrect. A combination of not enough exercise as well as an insufficient diet can cause obesity.

If your tortoise has enough exercise and the proper diet, it won't get fat, and there is nothing to worry about.
