Yes they can!! Atleast mine can! I have a baby pool for them and they love it! They swim under and over water. I have a rock in the middle that they can get on if they want to stop and rest. I only let them do this to get cooled off and then I return them to their enclosure (outside). Its a lot of fun to watch them swim!! :)

Luvpets, do u use a wire mesh or something else underneath the ground so they can't escape? I made mine enclosure with nothing would they be alright? I heard a horrible story that one got caught underneath the ground in the mesh and I'd like that.

Mine is just one of those plastic , cheap kiddie pools. I think its about 4 or 5 inches deep. I know they can not touch so they float or get on the rock I put in it. You could put a rock against the side (inside) and one outside for them so they can easily get out.

I didnt put anthing under the ground. I used wood for the sides and its tall. I put the wood in the ground about a foot just incase they tried to dig their way out.

Mine will stand on their hind leggs and strerch to see if they can reach the top!! It is so cute!! :)

The depth of the pool is not a factor, they are awkward looking swimmers but they do it very well, just make it easy for them to get out of the pool.

Don't make it too deep. They can get exhausted and drown if they can't get out easily.

They got on their hind leggs and stretched to see if they could reach the top....it was funny! They walked all around the sides and checked eveything out. They did this for weeks until they stopped. Mine do not seem to ever dig beside the wood so I am greatful for that. I do not have anything under mine. I just made sure the wood is in the ground deep in case they decide to start digging :)

I would just make a soaking pond . No need to let them swim . I would make sure they could walk around and not float . They swim across rivers and ponds in the wild but why risk your tortoise drowning.
