I upgraded The Professor from the "red heat bulb" to a Ceramic Heat emitter. It's weird that a lot of pet stores don't carry these.

I was also wonder if I should upgrade his day bulb.

Right now I'm using just a zoo med basking bulb (like this)...

BECAUSE - I put him outside in his Playpen for sun for 60-90 minutes a day.

Winter is approaching, less sun. Days may become rainy/overcast.

Would it be beneficial/possibly harmful? to use a power-sun type bulb in his enclosure?

I would think so long as you have the proper temps and there is uv in one of the bulbs for the enclosure you shouldn't have any problems.

Yeah if what your using is working then stick with it. CHE are exopensive and usually last a very long time. So most stores dont sell many because they last long, the red bulbs go out all the time and the mark up is substantial on products like these so they make more money on products moving faster. A lot of regular bulbs like a par 25 spot bulb is going to be half the price of a basking bulb "special for reptiles". if you can use a regular bulb and get the same amount of heat and temps you need then just use them. Just make sure your UVB bulb is adequete.

Very logical reasoning for the CHE not being in stores.

The case right now though is I use a basking bulb - which does not contain UVB - he's been getting UVB by going outside in small amounts.

The only thing I was wondering really, which I should have just said - Is there such thing as too much UVB exposure? ... I don't think so, but I have no experience with using this type of bulb and wanted to check.

Going with a powersun 100W. Thanks everybody!

Changing subjects:

I've been using the Zoo Med Timer to cycle between my bulbs (as opposed to manually)

But I have been monitoring the temp and humidity manually with a sensor I have.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006AR3DBK/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20

I see Zoo Med remote thermostats that say they work with the timer?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002AQD9A/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20

So if I'm understanding this right - I can hook up my day/night timer to this remote thermostat which reads and controls the temperature inside automatically based on the sensor location by turning on/off the bulbs when needed - correct?

I'm just looking at this online, so its kind of hard to figure out exactly how it works.

It's also hard to tell if it works well or not based on mix reviews.

Am I correct on how this works?

Is this a reliable product, or is there a better make/model people are using?

I find it easiest to have my basking lights on a timer for around 12 hours, and my CHE on a thermostat 24/7. If the basking light is keeping things warm enough, the CHE will stay off. As soon as the basking light clicks off and temps start to drop, the CHE kicks on and maintains the temps.

I use a heat rope and CHE connected to zilla thermostat,BUT the CHE is not connected during the day because the MVB and heat rope keeps things warm&humid .At night I connect the CHE and with the heat rope running 24/7 keeps things just right :D
Did I forget to mention I use a CLOSED CHAMBERED enclosure best idea EVER ! !
