I am building a playpen for Sheldon which I intend to use for about 3 yrs while
he is still a young tort. This way he has a place to hang out when I'm outside doing yardwork. We live in S.Fl and he is a cherryhead redfoot. I am using a 4ft x 3ft dog
crate on a large table. We had the dog crate because it previously housed Max,
our Flemish Giant rabbit who passed away last year. He was just old, not sick. I got any rabbit fur off of
the crate because I know that can be a choking hazard to torts. I lined it
with a green tarp in two directions and covered it with half inch vinyl mesh.
I also used a dowel rod thru the tarp to keep the tarp up at the doorway.
As for predators, we have them all, you name it. And while he is located under
2 palm trees, if he were to escape, there are 3 fences to dig and 3 bodies of
water to contend with. My pool, the neighbors pool and a canal with gators
behind the houses. So, my paranoia is limitless !!!
Please check out the pics attached. Excuse the zip ties that arent trimmed,
I have yet to finish the roof top. I also let Sheldon take a peek and a quick
soak ! I feel like I should let the mulch air out. I put one bag of cypress mulch
& a bag of orchid bark so far.
Thanks ~

That looks like a very safe place for him. I would put a bunch of plants in their, so he has stuff to explore and munch on. Plants will provide great places to hide too.

Yes, I will decorate with plants. The tarp sides are 14 inches tall & right now he is amost 3 inches
long. So with substrate its about 10 inches of side
wall.
Will the mulch smell air out or bother him ?

As long as it is not cedar or pine the smell should not bother him. I have never had a problem and use Cyprus mulch sometimes. Outside it should be fine I think.
