It's probably no good. Take it out of the water and nestle it down into some moist potting soil. Put it in a warm spot, like near the water heater, and keep it moist and covered. They usually hatch in about 3 months.

How do I tell if it's infertile or fertile? If its infertile, what should I do?

If it is fertile it will turn very white, or chalky looking. Because she didn't dig a nest, chances are good it is not fertile.

Wait 2 weeks or so then shine a very bright light under the egg. You should be able to see little blood vessels inside if it's fertile. If it's no good, just toss it.

I have had females that never dig nests but produce fertile eggs. So who knows?

It doesn't matter. The egg is unfertilized, and she started stepping on it. Iz dead

also I shined a light on it. It was too opaque

You place the flashlight directly ON the underside of the egg so it's shining up through the egg and towards your eyes.
