This is the first time I have seen noticeable, what looks to be like, blood on my tortoise’s poop. My tortoise is about 8-9 years old and has been doing fine recently, he has been acting normal and I think pretty healthy. It has only been today that I saw his poop about 40 minutes ago from posting this, he was sitting outside as usual in the sun but only he was sleeping in front of his poop facing it, and I noticed the redness. He was sleeping and I was worried because of the blood and including that he looked very tired and woke up only when I touched his hand. I then checked under his belly to his cloaca to see if he was bleeding but only saw that his tail looked moist and a very tiny bit of his penis was showing from the hole. It is not wholly uncommon for his penis to come out whenever he pees or poops, and I do worry about it getting cut by something or getting dirty.

This is how it looks. It’s very slight but still pretty noticeable. It has some little leaves and sticks on it from when I was picking it up, but other than that it is very fibrous and green. The amount of greenness is from avocados that he eats. They fall from the tree I have in my backyard, I pick them up before I’m going to put him outside and whenever I go out to check on him, but the squirrels come and keep dropping them when I’m inside and he often eats some, often in medium amounts giving him diarrhea. 11AC0012-1B0A-4258-9CCE-500D7BCC4160.jpeg CE115672-8B08-49F5-96DE-972A14A9DCDE.jpeg These are the closest closeups I could get. I’m not entirely sure what it could be that is causing this. I can almost assure that the redness is not something he ate because there aren’t any red plants or leaves around. His diet is mainly consisting of grasses and the plants I have in my backyard right now, I feed him Romaine lettuce too occasionally, but not recently. I wanted to make this post today, and not wait to see what happens tomorrow or in a few days because this does look pretty unsettling and alarming to me and I need to get some thoughts from other experienced tortoise owners and people who know more about this than I do, anything helps, I just want to see if this is anything, before going to see a Veterinary.

I today just barley noticed that my neighbor put a small cactus plant outside in the yard. I found it knocked over and eaten with chunks of it missing. Could this possibly be the cause of it?
Could his cloaca or insides get cut from eating a cactus?

In my experience, pooped out blood is usually black in color.
If this is blood, it's from downstream of the digestive tract.
I'm curious to know what others think.
I'm leaning towards it being a semi digested food item and not blood at all.
Yes perhaps, but Id also like to add that he has been making a lot of breathing noises, grunting noises while he is laying down sleeping.
