We got our baby tortoise on Thursday and he's only eaten a 1/4 tomato and a tiny bit of lettuce leaf. He seems happy, walking around, climbing, going in and out his water. Sleeping at night. Should we be worried about the amount he's eating or not?

Brand new babies/hatchlings are usually very terrified during the whole “new owner transfer” process & are more worried about not being eaten themselves. It takes some time for them to feel safe & secure to then worry about finding food!

Hang in there!

Okay brilliant. How long until we need to worry do you think?

Make sure all the parameters are dialed in properly - lighting, heat, substrate, hide & food/water. Often times people don’t provide the right conditions.

Try not to “mess about” with your new tort. Don’t constantly pick it up & fidgit with it. It’s scared and needs to settle in. It should feel safe after a “few” days.

In the meantime, here’s a good info guide on Hermanns.
