Hey everyone!

I was wondering if someone could confirm the sex of my Russian and maybe identify its subspecies.

I think it's a male because his tail is so chubby and long?

And I think I narrowed down the subspecies as either T.h.horsfieldii
or T.h.kazachstanica. I read the post on Russian subspecies, but I can't decide if he/she is considered domed or flat.

Any input would be appreciated!!!

Thanks! :)

Congratulations - it's a boy! Can't help you with the subspecies though. :(

WOOHOO! I finally got the gender right! I feel like I finally learned something! Now if I can find out the subspecies and why I'll be on my way to not being totally clueless! :p

I have never attempted subspecies, but by comparing photos with the Russian subspecies in the stickied section, maybe you have a T.h.kazachstanica?

Hi,

To identify subspecies of Russian is a lot harder as gracea for example. And to identify them in the US is very difficult. Because all species are mixed up when they were imported. So actually you can identify them except you know the habitat.

Definitely a boy. Handsome little tortoise you have there.

I would guess he's of the horsfieldii subspecies.
The kazachstanica subspecies is as wide as they are long, and they are much flatter. Yours is more oval and domed enough that I don't think it's a kazachstanica - 2 of mine are shaped like that. :) 1 of mine is kazachstanica, and she is 7" long and 7" wide and built like a solid little tank. 2 of mine are the 'rustamovi' variety, and they are much longer. :)
