~ Many of you that follow with the development of our new location for our giant tortoise program are aware of the constant challenges and struggles we are going through. I am posting this for awareness and emphasizing the importance of being proactive during all construction phases of any habitats or structures used for tortoises. Yesterday the carpenters were putting up the soffit on my new barn, while doing so they dropped numerous nails and cut white aluminum pieces on the ground. These white nails and cut aluminum pieces are extremely sharp, jagged and are not responding to the magnet rollers i am using. I had to literally pick up every little piece by hand. These are potentially dangerous and life threatening if consumed. I am continuously bringing awareness to my GC and sub-contractors, however there seems to constantly be non compliance with policing these materials. I literally spent hours trying to pick all this up hoping that it never becomes any issues. If tortoise digest these materials it could easily cause impaction or internal perforation.View attachment 322666View attachment 322667View attachment 322668
So frustrating! I wonder if sweeping the whole yard with a metal detector after construction and before moving day night be a good idea

~ I have done that several times, hours at a time. The main field of concern is over one acre. I am constantly checking and sweeping the field, especially where all the actual building was being conducted. It has been a constant battle with my GC and them holding the subs accountable, it is very concerning and upsets us greatly at ALDABRAMAN. 168853966_1374221212939328_8693679864891216506_n.jpgCARPENTER.jpg168925353_1374214376273345_4483301843408072058_n.jpg169399463_1373932402968209_5257428442003720741_n.jpg168642986_1373217849706331_6885926899759950455_n.jpg

~ I actually have purchased two, one that is hand held and one that rolls. The problem i am experiencing is that the magnet seems weak and only picks up if the nails are very close to the top of the dirt. I have better luck after a good rain, the embedded metal debris seems to be dislodged and gets picked up easier. I will continue with my efforts until it is moving day and there after. It is not all the little nails, it is unbelievably large pieces of rebars, metal ties, etc. @ West Camp (future location of ALDABRAMAN).142559386_1325705344457582_3103850227695947201_o.jpg131300882_1301614663533317_3947022411004023404_o.jpg133556949_1305784349783015_4966022664396862671_o.jpg135133409_1311320279229422_6410982354084136259_o.jpg

It almost appears they are dropping junk on purpose - hard to believe that much just slips thru their hands...I feel for you.

~ I suspect it is due to multiple reasons, simply disgusting and potentially dangerous or life threatening to our tortoises. 140048347_1322713724756744_6532417964478216790_o.jpg140139326_1322713681423415_4107432481738486807_o.jpg

~ Today i did my normal three hours of sweeping with the roller and picking up all the aluminum small cut pieces from the carpenters, this is today's results. It is horrible, some days are less, the carpenters have been busy lately. IMG_5635.jpgIMG_5632.jpgIMG_5637.JPGIMG_5630.jpgIMG_5633.jpgIMG_5634.jpg
