I saw the article on mixing breeds; but I'm not sure if it applies here - I have these two - the juvenile has outgrown his enclosure and I'm wondering if I can let him walk around. Augustus, my 36ish year old, wanders the yard and is very sociable. Will the two fight? I definitely need to get "Sammy" free roam of the yard as well but will I need to separate them? Both are healthy, eating machines. Thanks in advance. I'm in N. California (SF Bay Area).

They will definitely fight.

Tortoises are territorial and the older one will try to get the younger one out of the territory. This involves pushing, biting and trying to turn the younger one over, to die on his back in the sun.
