I’ve never heard of hybridization for tortoises before. I would assume, based on the natural laws of biology, that hybridization among two species would be really difficult in terms of both breeding and care. I’m not really a biologist or anything myself, but if I were you i would do extensive...
Ah, I see. I didn’t realize you could find some weeds in the snow, very interesting. I’ll have to find some weeded areas that can supply me with a few weeds in the cold then ^^ There’s been a lot of frost in my area though, so hopefully the frost hasn’t choked the life out of any salvageable...
Aah I see! Ill have to find the time to set up an indoor gardening area and get some seeds online. Also, what supermarket would you recommend for finding these dark leafy greens? [emoji1334]♀️
Hello tortoise forum! :) earlier this year, I moved from the humid tropics of Oahu, Hawaii, to the cold chilly forests of northern Idaho. I took my 3 redfoot tortoises with me.
Since it’s quite cold in Idaho, especially at this time of year, I’ve already built them a winter enclosure that is...
There’s a chance I might move from Hawaii to the mainland next year. I’m able to take my 3 RF tortoises with me, but I don’t know how I’ll be able to get them from Hawaii all the way over the ocean and to my next home.
Is there any way I can take them with me on a plane?(weather they’d be in...
Also, forgot to mention; try to give the tortoise some space. If you handle him a lot it can stress him out, if you leave him in his enclosure he’ll be able to rest. Sometimes the best treatment for a tortoise is just giving them space. ;;
The situation with your baby sulcata sounds really strange [emoji848]
If it’s an infection like your veterinarian said, I’d suggest keeping him cozied up, since most illnesses in reptiles are due to too cold of temperatures. Keeping him in a uvb basking area of 80-85 degrees would be my...
I forgot to talk about the shell rot!!
To help with that, there are some simple remedies that I’ve heard really help.
I can’t mention any in particular, but if you search ‘shell rot’ in the health section of these forums you’ll find lots of help!
It’s unfortunate to see the health conditions of your little red foot :(.
I think you may have received incorrect information from whoever sold you the baby redfoot. You should read up on their care from a trustworthy site (I recommend reptile magazine).
I have some ideas or suggestions you...
I think #3 is broadleaf plantain, but I’d need a better photo to be 100% sure. (Broadleaf is safe for tortoises)
I have a few ideas what #5 could be, but I’d need a better picture of that too. It looks sort of like bristly oxtongue
Those are cactus pads my dear. :)
There is a species of cactus that’s really popular among tortoise owners called prickly pear, which has cactus pads that look just like that.
Im not a cactus expert, so I’m not 100% sure if those are prickly pear(tho it looks very similar). Since those look...
An update on the tortoise:
A few other flakes of what seems to be shedding skin flaked off, they were small tho and it’s only seemed to happen twice. There is a small line of peeling clear skin on her neck (tho hardly noticeable).
I think it’s safe to conclude that she’s shedding, since she...
I keep her along with my other two torts outside. The humidity in my area is always stated to be around 70% according to my weather app, tho the area I live in hardly gets a lot of rain and is usually really hot and dusty.
I hose my tortoises on a mist setting every day tho, just so they aren’t...
I'm not sure how old your tortoise is, but based on the way the scutes look, it may be shell shed?
I'm not 100% sure about this, this is just a guess from my perspective, but I would do some research about tortoises and turtles shedding their shells to see if it may be the case.
Shell shedding...
Just a few minutes ago, I was petting my adult female RF's head (since she enjoys the affection and let's me pet or scratch her head).
Everything seemed normal... until a piece of scale seemed to chip off randomly from my scratching?
At first I thought it was the hardened dirt she has on her...
Can someone give me an ID on all these plants? Are they safe to feed to my redfoots?
Note: I live in Hawaii, so most or some of these plants may be tropical, tho I'm unsure... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So far it's been an hour and she hasn't shown any signs of sickness... while watching her I was searching through the web on how I can get the sponge out of her...
I found two ways, one was to feed her pumpkin as a laxative to have her eventually poop it out, the other is to give her a small...
