Orchard Grass Hay for DT, stems and all?

I always feed my DT the whole pads as well. You may be surprised at how adept they are at chomping them. Plus, they don't get all slimy and gross.

CA native plants for outdoor CDT enclosure

Thank you.. Yes I understand about many native edible plants being weeds. I guess I was wondering if there are more native plants that may also double as decorative as well.

CA native plants for outdoor CDT enclosure

I'm sure this has been asked and answered in various ways over the years, but I am looking for some specific suggestions. I am going to be planting a section of my yard, an L-shaped planter, roughly 3' x 20' on each side. I am looking for some CA native plants that are easy to care for, don't...

    Weed ID Please

Hello, as I've pulled many dandelion, mallow and nettles from my yard, it has been taken over by some clover and these tall weeds. Can I get an ID please and an idea on if they are suitable for feeding a desert tortoise? Also, what's this giant guy? Sprung up in a couple weeks.

    Night Box Plans

I plan on copying your basic night box design. How big is recommended for a DT? Is bigger better or does it just introduce issues with keeping temp correct?

    Night Box Plans

Hello, I've been reading through many threads on night boxes and think I have a direction to head in, but would like some help. I am looking for a night box for a desert tortoise located in Southern California. Are there any pre-made solutions that work well for a tortoise of this size in my...

    Vegetable scraps

Try to feed my 4-year-old desert tortoise as broad a mix as possible. Right now the diet consists of about 50% spring minor similar, 25% cactus pads and 25% local weeds. I’d like to mix in some of my dinner vegetable scraps but am a bit unsure what should definitely be avoided. Generally what I...

    Is this a thistle?

Thank you there appear to be a majority of only 2 plants total. The sow thistle (thanks again) and some invasive vine i plan on just throwing away. It’s quite a mess.

    Is this a thistle?

Hello, I am cleaning out a ton of weeds and vines from my garden this weekend. Everything seems to be a vine that I pretty sure isn’t edible and this weed which appears to be some sort of thistle, which I’m pretty sure is. Ok to feed?

Tortoises don't want to use new hide

Thank you for your suggestions. He seems to be pretty dumb. He's never shown picky tendencies before with enclosure changes or food, but he did get in a fight recently with a spider plant that he's been with his entire life and he wasn't winning...

Tortoises don't want to use new hide

Thanks. I already new the advice was sound but of course didn't *want* to follow it. Even separated, the remaining tortoise will not use the new hide though. Last night I placed the old small hide inside the larger one and sure enough he went right in for the night. One other small detail...

Tortoises don't want to use new hide

Hello. I have had a pair of DTs housed together (I know, I know) for 3 years. So far, so good. In that time, I've had a few different hides for them, ranging from a cardboard box to a LEGO hut to their most recent hide, the bottom of a plastic trashcan with a hole cut in the side. Every...
