My turtles are about 1-1.5 inches. Yesterday I started to notice that the lines on the shell seem thicker on the bigger one. (Does that make sense?) Is this because he's growing or am I doing something wrong?

If they defecate somewhere else, take the feces and put it in the litter box. Then put them in the litter box. They need the smell association. This worked well for my two kittens. Also, try the Kitten Attract litter from PetSmart, at least until they get trained.
I've had Xander for a week now. I moved him from a 12x12x18 to a medium KK. He's regularly eating his CGD and has had one cricket. He's also regularly defecating. He lets me handle him for a few minutes every day, and is getting much better about walking from hand to hand instead of jumping...
