    Where to buy a tortoise

I believe Arizona Tortoise Compound has Eastern and Dalmations for sale. I believe they were hatched right at the beginning of the year/end of the year so still pretty young. ATC has a good reputation and would be a good source for a Hermanns.

    Formal Intro - Lengthy

Sending the Marginated back was a tough decision, proud of my daughter for looking at the bigger picture with how long she would have Sheldon (aka Sheldon 2.0). We actively tracked his return back after packing him well for the trip and he arrived nice and early the following day and we got...

    Formal Intro - Lengthy

I have not done a formal intro before but I have asked a few questions and been reading a lot. So a bit background, as part of the intro, sorry in advance for the length: My daughter (10) decided she wanted a tortoise for Christmas after some research and reading up on species on various sites...

    Species ID?

Sheldon was bought as a "well started" ~6mo old Eastern Hermanns, and we have had him for about 3 weeks. The more reading I do and pictures I see I'm somewhat questioning what "he" is: shell pattern, and coloration (skin in particular). Looking for help with a positive identification so I can be...

    Lighting for tortoise table?

Thanks for all the advice. Sheldon got his lighting upgrade completed today: 24" reptisun 5HO, 10.0 UV bulb (16-18" above surface) 65W flood light in front 100W CHE in the back Basking area under flood is holding between 95-100F. Tweaking the CHE a bit. When it was over rock before it would...

    Lighting for tortoise table?

Ok. I call that the fixture. It have seen some with a reflective shield and others without. That's what I'm referring to as the reflector which I assume would take some of the light going up and reflect back down.

    Lighting for tortoise table?

Ok, so I made a structure to be able to mount a tube above the table width wise and provisions to mount two other dome/similar for a CHE and maybe a second incandescent as recommended. I'm looking at the reptisun 10.0 T8 24" bulb but haven't really found a fixture I want to buy yet. Any...

    Lighting for tortoise table?

So many different ways to do Things. Tort is an Eastern Hermanns. So there is no issue with a fixture Mounted along the inside edge of the table, not having to make something to hang the tube above would make life easier. Assume you meant a 10.0 bulb not 10". If I mount on the inside edge I...

    Lighting for tortoise table?

Happy new year. I'm currently using a 100w ceramic element for heat and a mini CFL light uvb/uva for light. Both held in a double mini dome about 8-9" above the basking spot. Based on recommendations I want to move away from CFL. I'd prefer not to scrap the entire set up I have now to do so...

    Lighting question

Interesting that you both talk mounting orientation. I currently have the bulb in a double (mini combo deep dome fixture) paired with a 100w ceramic emitter which is hanging so both are in the vertical orientation. Not really seeing how orientation would have an effect on this. Seemingly your...

    Lighting question

My family just got a ~6 mo Eastern Hermann and I have spent quite some time trolling the site over the past few weeks. My first question seems to tie to a debated topic but might be an off shoot on the safety (eyes) of CFL bulbs. Most refer to the ones which potentially caused/contributed to...
